Easter and time for a clean

With a power washer from Dromad Hire, Monday saw a thorough clean of Cait. All the green and dirt was washed off, leaving it looking much better.

The topsides got a clean as well...looks well in the sun (although it freezing, 3 degrees C this morning).

After cleaning we started to remove some of the teak shown in the picture below, much of it is rotting.

The port side has some calcium staining along the waterline, I had planned to use the Y10 this morning...but it can't be used under 10degrees C!

Job for a warmer day...

Update for 2012

Need to get moving!! Been busy clearing out all the rotten wood. Most of the cockpit is gone and now we've moved down into the heads as well! There's going to be a lot of work to do...

Funding the project...

Hopefully sold, our Beneteau First 210, which we named Seanna. We bought this boat a couple of years ago in Donegal and kept in Carlinford marina for the past three years summers. It provided lots of entertainment and fun for the family. We had a couple of nice races towards the end of last year as well, didn't do too badly !!

Cait - first coat!

The door to the doghouse in in good shape, this was sanded down and a couple of coats of wood stain added, beginning to look better...

Cait - engine removed

Taking away any rotten wood resulted in most of the left hand side of the doghouse being removed...

Notice too that the engine has also been removed to be replaced by a similar engine acquired in Killybegs. At this stage the cylinders are being honed down and bearings etc. will be replaced before refitting.



Cait - out of the water into the yard

Cait was hauled out of the Shannon and brough to a yard closer to home to be refurbished. We made up a trailer to hold it while in the yard giving us an option to use a tractor to tow it to the water at a later date.

With her in the year the job of clearing all the rubbish out of her begins...

Two big jobs, one to strip out any rotten woodwork and the second to remove and refurbish/replace the engine...

 

Colvic Victor 34 - Cait na Mara

We came accross this boat for sale in Athlone, Ireland. We had previously restored a Colvic Victor 34 and saw that this one was in pretty good shape (considering), and purchased with a view to restore. See picture of the boat while still on the river Shannon.

However, it did look as if a lot of work was required....

and not just on the outside, the inside as well.

Amazing at this stage what our perceptions were! We realised the engine was 'bunched' but until the rest of the floorboards and woodwork was lifted...only then did we realise the extent of damage that a water tank filler without a cap, and no hose can do. Essentially the boat was filling with water (at least it was fresh water), but the boat was full of water up to floor level and probably had been so for three or so years.
